Old aluminum storm door metal panel replacement

by Mary
(Chambersburg, PA)

I have an old aluminum storm door that has the fixed metal panel at the bottom. I also have two small dogs that would hopefully enjoy a doggie door that I purchased from the pet store. Is there a way to slide out the metal panel and replace it with a temporary panel (with the doggie door) to see if they will use it? If not, then I would like to toss the temporary panel and put the original one back in. (Fear of commitment) Thanks.

Doggie door.

I did commit to the door and our pooch loved it. Took about 10 minutes of pushing her through the door. I did have to cut the hole on the panel and build a wooden frame for the doggie door and sandwich it all together as the doggie door was thick. Go for it. You and the dogs will be glad you did.

Hi Mary;

You would have to remove the door and pull the bottom of the door off. The bottom is usually held on with 4 screws, two on the left vertical rail and two on the right.

Sometimes the old panel is glued to prevent rattles, other times it is crimped. This can make it difficult to get the old panel out without damage.
