Guardian screen door good and stuck

by Doug

I have a Gardian sliding door and want to take out the sliding screen door to put a new screen in it. A few other houses I owned I replaced screens that had holes or were sun damaged. I cannot loosen the tension to pop out the screen. I also do not know what type the screw heads are, Robertson or the square head type.

Hi Doug;

Most of them screen door adjustment screws in Canada have square Robertson heads but there are screens imported from the States that have Phillips cross heads. Sometimes you get adjustment screws that are so badly corroded they wont turn at all.

If the door still slides ok it may be easier to rescreen it without removing it. So long as you can reach the spline channel all the way around you can clamp a piece of screen cloth up around the frame and roll it in. It's just a bit more challenging to do than when the frame is lying on the ground.

You can sometimes get the frame out by flexing the middle out by pulling on it so that the bottom of the door pops out of the track. If you pull too hard you may bend the door but often you only need to get 1/8" or 1/4" movement to get it out.

If the patio door is sagging i use a 2x4 and a hydraulic jack to push the frame up enough to allow the screen door to come out. Again sometimes 1/8" to 1/4" is often all you need.

If all else fails, cut the old door in half, drag it out and install a brand new screen door. If its a 40 year old Guardian patio door, it might just be time!
